Shoreditch — Stow Brothers

Welcome to Shoreditch

Shoreditch has always been a bit of a rule-breaker. Back in 1576, it was home to The Theatre—England’s first-ever playhouse — where Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and Hamlet probably made their debuts. When the theatre was dismantled in 1598, its timbers were literally recycled to help build The Globe on the South Bank.

Our local guide: Shoreditch

But when industry declined, Shoreditch became a little… well, abandoned. That is, until artists, creatives, and risk-takers moved in during the late 20th century, lured by cheap rents and huge warehouse spaces. What followed? A full-blown cultural revival that transformed the area into the thriving cultural and tech hub it is today, with a mix of street art, independent businesses, and Michelin-starred dining.

Now, Redchurch Street is a hotspot for designer boutiques, concept stores, and stylish cafés. Food enthusiasts flock to Smoking Goat for Thai barbecue, Brat for its celebrated wood-fired cuisine, and Plates for creative plant-based dishes. Campania & Jones and Freddie’s Bistro offer rustic, intimate dining experiences.

For those who love a cool hangout with a twist, Bike Shed is part café, part workshop, part retail space, attracting motorcycle lovers and curious coffee drinkers alike. And for proper old-school pub vibes, The Royal Oak is a solid choice—especially before heading to Columbia Road’s famous Sunday flower market.

Of course, Shoreditch is also about the cocktails. If you like your drinks with a side of live jazz and speakeasy charm, Nightjar is the place. Prefer a bit of quirk? Callooh Callay (yes, inspired by Alice in Wonderland) has hidden rooms and inventive drinks that’ll keep you guessing.
