Welcome to Hackney Central

Hackney Central has a long and fascinating history, evolving from a rural Tudor-era village into a bustling industrial and cultural hub. Back in the 19th century, the railway brought industry, factories, and a whole lot of hustle. Hackney became a powerhouse for textiles, furniture making, and brewing—because even then, East London knew the value of a good pint. Some of the area’s grand old buildings still hint at its prosperous past, but these days, they’re more likely to house cool cafés than corset factories.

Our local guide: Hackney Central

Hackney Central — Stow Brothers

One of its most iconic landmarks, Hackney Empire, was built in 1901 as a music hall, hosting legendary performers like Charlie Chaplin. It later became a TV studio and bingo hall before being restored to its former glory, now showcasing everything from stand-up comedy to opera.

When the city gets too much, Hackney’s green spaces are ready to rescue you. London Fields, once grazing land, is now home to the beloved Lido, where you can brave a swim even in winter. Hackney Downs is great for picnics, dog-walking and pretending you’re in the countryside.

As for food and drink, Hackney Central doesn’t disappoint. Violet Cakes is a must for pastries that look too pretty to eat (but you will anyway). Bun and Sum serves up innovative dishes, while The Narrow Street Kitchen keeps things exciting. And of course, no Hackney experience is complete without a visit to one of its legendary pubs—Pub on the Park, The Prince Arthur, and The Spurstowe Arms are all firm favourites for a relaxed pint and some prime people-watching.
